There are many ways to read the stars after all...

Do you know your Zodiac Sun sign? How about your Sun rune?

Have you ever flipped to the back of the Poetic Edda? You’ll find nestling in those last sections a report of the birth of Prince Helgi whose passage into Middle Earth was marked by the Nornir (fates) taking golden threads and stringing them across the Moon’s Hall to set his destiny. It always intrigued me. Sort of, sat there, stewing away in my subconscious – almost as if it was (dare I say it)…destined.

Did you know that 90% of people know what their Zodiac Sun sign is? The Zodiac is based on the Babylonian astrological system which is well known and highly respected – but it isn’t the only system out there.

As with all astrological systems, until very recently, only the very wealthy and very important would have been able to have their astrological charts crafted and interpreted.

What if, I asked myself, still stewing – what if the story of Helgi was one of an astrological reading? What if the threads were a birth chart? A weaving, in fact, of the web of wyrd as read from the stars at the point of Helgi’s birth?

All this, I pondered, while wrestling with the runic system of astrology presented by the researcher and visionary Nigel Pennick. Wrestling might seem like a strong word but it is a fair description of my resistance to astrology (any astrology). I didn’t want to believe in fate and I couldn’t see what it had to do with the stars. Only it seemed the stars, and fate, had other views on the matter.

14 years later I have created many, many birth rune charts. I have explored them with my clients, developed meditations, healings, shamanic journeys and devotional rites from them. I’ve even published 3 astrological journals at the time of writing thise! Have you every had something like that? A passion, a soul medicine that just refused to be dismissed and kept on proving your doubts wrong?

In this week’s Magic in Mind I share details of how you can join the very first Starcrafting with the Runes challenge taking place in the Hearthspace in September. I’ll be sharing trainings in birth runes and runic astrology so you pull on those golden threads yourself and see whether this beautiful, complex, frustratingly powerful and compelling systen speaks to your soul.

And to keep it practical your episode of Magic in Mind also includes a luck-building technique working with your Seer, Mystic, Magician, Healer and Sage. Luck was referred to as hamingja by the Norse and maegen by the Anglo Saxons and was viewed as an active, influenceable force. The road of fate may be laid out in the stars, but who we are and what we do on the journey remains ours to shape.
