Kindling the need-fire in times of loss and transformation

In the dark I light the fire to conjure myself home.
I fill the emptiness with my song.
It is a deep lowing and a keening wail — Nauthiz, Nauthiz, Nauthiz.

I have lost some part of myself, some essential piece of my being.
I light the flame to call it home.

What the Nauthiz rune really teaches

The dark night of the soul signifies a spiritual crisis — the anchors of purpose and meaning lost. The soul untethers and spins into the void: aching, dull, despairing, incomplete.

In the modern world it is a breaking, an uncomfortable space for us and those around us. We might be viewed as needing healing, or to be rescued; tempted to hide it, “get over it,” or stop being so sensitive.

There are dark nights brought on by trauma that require us to reach out for help. From a shamanic perspective this is the place of soul loss, and we can gain support from a practitioner who will quest for the soul part, return it to us, and help us to reintegrate it.

Most dark nights, however, are not signs that we are beyond our own capacity to heal. The Nauthiz rune teaches that the response to the dark night is the lighting of the need-fire. It calls us to take an active role in re-kindling the day. This is not helpless wishing; it is an act of transformation.

Three ways the dark night appears

🌒 1. The micro-level

Moments when the outer world jolts our inner identity.
A criticism, a mistake, a passing disappointment — any small disruption that asks “Who am I, really?” Each one is a tiny exile of self. We might push away the part that felt hurt, or the part that tried and failed. These are micro-wounds, everyday invitations to light a spark of self-compassion and reintegration.

🌓 2. The turning of the year

Seasons of change that erode meaning and purpose.
A move, a career shift, a relationship ending, the body’s decline. Each transition can leave us disoriented, cut loose from the structures that once gave our lives direction. Real mourning and reflection take time, and we are rarely given it. In these periods, Nauthiz reminds us to tend the slow flame of purpose as it reforms.

🌕 3. The shattering

Those sudden, world-upending traumas that leave no familiar centre.
Here, the dark night can become a place of profound need. Lighting the need-fire may mean seeking the warmth of others — therapy, community, spiritual guidance, or the care of trusted friends. Nauthiz honours the courage of asking for help; the need-fire burns brighter when shared.

In each of these spaces, the invitation is the same: to light the need-fire and call yourself home.

The teaching of Nauthiz

The dark night is a process of exile from the self.
Here I am, in the dark — how do I get home again?

Nauthiz teaches that you are already home. There is a part of you that has gone questing — not stolen, but seeking healing and transformation. It waits on the edge of the void for your call. Working with Nauthiz, you become the flame that guides and welcomes it back.

However long it takes, I will be here.
I know I found you painful; I may have pushed you away.
But I know that is because you are powerful,
which means I am powerful, which means we are powerful.
