Money might be the most powerful story ever told.
It crosses every border. It shapes who eats and who doesn’t, who has access and who is locked out, whose voice carries and whose is silenced. We have a trillionaire walking the earth right now. And even when we *know* money is a story, a shared agreement, not a law of nature, knowing that doesn’t loosen its grip.
If you’ve spent any time in magical or spiritual spaces, you’ll know this story has its own mythology too: manifestation. Vision boards. Affirmations. The right method, practised correctly, said to unlock wealth for anyone willing to try.
And here’s my honest belief, after years of watching this play out: those techniques work for some people. Not all people.
Not because some of us are doing it wrong. Because of something older.
Orlog and wyrd
In the Northern tradition, each of us carries what I think of as a kind of personal orlog: the deeper pattern of lessons and experiences your soul is here to live through. It’s not fixed in the sense of fate sealed shut, but it has weight. Gravity.
If a manifestation clashes with your orlog, it won’t work, no matter how strong the desire, the will, or the magic behind it. Orlog is stronger than wanting.
Then there’s wyrd more fluid, more immediate. Think of wyrd as orlog in motion, the live current of where energy is actually flowing right now. You can do beautiful manifestation work, but if there’s no channel for it to move through, no job application sent, no ticket bought, no door knocked on, it has nowhere to land.
This isn’t a rejection of manifestation. It’s a more honest map of how it actually works.

Many magical communities are doing real, important work broadening what “wealth” even means, trying to loosen money’s grip on our imagination of what a rich life looks like. That work matters. But let’s be honest: we can’t be fully free from the story. We live inside it. What we can do is widen our experience of what abundance, prosperity, and nourishment actually feel like, underneath the bank balance.
Which brings me to the rune for this half-month: Fehu.
Fehu: older than money
Fehu is the first rune of the Elder Futhark. Its modern gloss is “wealth.” Its older meaning is “cattle”.
Not coins. Not currency. Cattle: livestock, life-force, the wealth a community could actually live from. Fehu carries food, pleasure, magical force, luck, and that unmistakable tingle of “life is good right now”.
Its root runs all the way back to Audhumla, the primal cow of Norse cosmology, who nourished all beings indiscriminately – simply by existing, simply by flowing.
Not my body is nourished, or my bank account is full. Just: “nourished”. Body. Emotion. Intellect. Soul. All of it, Fehu flowing through.
The mama of the story
Here’s what makes Fehu particularly potent for this work: the Elder Futhark isn’t just a magical alphabet. It’s the ancestral root of the sound-and-symbol system that English and the other Germanic languages are built on.
Story is made of letters, sounds, symbols. And Fehu sits underneath all of it ”the mama* of the story, older than money, older than the myth we’re all currently living inside.
So when we work with Fehu: chant its sound, draw it, sit with it, we’re not asking it to manifest a specific outcome. We’re not saying “bring me wealth” or “bring me this job.” That would still trap us inside the modern story, the one made of conscious wanting and gripping.
Instead, we let Fehu connect us to something older and wider: an archetypal current that can bring nourishment through in whatever form it actually needs to take. Sometimes that’s money. Often it isn’t.
We are part of an ecosystem
This is the piece I most want to leave you with tonight: Fehu’s old poems and lessons are clear that we don’t receive nourishment. We don’t consume it.
We participate in it
It must keep flowing through us, not just to us. We’re not the endpoint. We’re part of the current.

This Monday evening, at 7:30pm, I will be in Hearthspace — our free Facebook community — for the Hearthfire Gathering.
We will be exploring Fehu in more depth.
Come. It is free. It is open. You are welcome.
