Birth Runes: A soul journey

I know I chose to be here. Sung into the stars by the disir and nornir who surrounded me at birth and wove my song into the tapestry of Midgard.

How do I unlock the wisdom held in that tapestry? How do I know myself through the eyes of my disir and the nornir? How do I call on the power of my rune soul song?  

Every ancient people  developed an astrological system unique to them.  A practice of connection to personal destiny and spiritual heritage. When I found my northern tradition path I found my way home, but I missed the guidance of the stars.  

I felt their possibility in the voices of the runes who whispered of cyclical time, stellar navigation and spiritual enlightenment.  I felt their possibility as I read of the heroes whose detinies were woven by the Nornir (fates) across the vault of the heavens.   I instinctively sensed that I could achieve deeper, more powerful alignment with my wyrd if I could also trace its flow through space.  

I began in-depth study of the literature available to me about runic astrology  15-years ago.  I tweaked, I experimented, I journeyed, I meditated.

Is this a beginners programme?

No. You will need to have a sound knowledge of the runes of the Elder Futhark before you start. Awaken to the Runes is the ideal preparation and all graduates are welcome on this programme. I do accept those with comparable experience (please email talk@maginrose.com to arrange an interview).

Monthly coach and connect sessions dive deep into a particular aspect of runic astrology and the birth runes. They are hosted on Zoom at 20:30 London(BST/GMT) and are for 1 hour.

Tyr’s Chariot and the shadow of the masculine

Weds 22nd Jan

Tyr on retreat offers a great opportunity to get close and personal with the wounds of the masculine. 

To prepare for this session:
– make sure you know your rune and Hall for your Tyr’s Chariot birth rune
– journalling, meditation on the differences between personal success and personal integrity
– look out for any insights Fehu and Uruz have to offer as Tyr retreats into their energies to excavate the shadows lurking there
The Sun and the dark night of the soul

Weds 5th Feb

Your Sunna’s Chariot rune resonates with your soul essence – meaning when you veer off course it can vibrate even more powerfully, and sometimes uncomfortably in your life. 

To prepare for this session:
– make sure you know your Sun Rune and Hall
– journalling, meditation on the dark night of the soul: personal experiences, what its purpose is, how to travel through it
– look out for any insights from Algiz, Sowilo and Teiwaz as Sunna’ moves through them this lunar month
 
The Moon and sensitivity to energy

Weds 19th Mar

Your Manni’s Chariot rune holds your receptive self – open and awake to all the energies around you. This month sees the first full lunar eclipse – 14th March when the wolf that chases the lunar Chariot is said to catch the Chariot of the Moon in its jaws. 

To prepare for this session:

– make sure you know your Moon Rune, Hall and Hearth
– journalling, meditation on how you experience the world ‘energetically’ – is it pleasant, unpleasant, a total mystery or something familiar?
– look out for any insights from this month’s planetary movement. These include the New Moon in Teiwaz and Full Moon in Kenaz but also a lot of Berkano energy

To deepen your exploration you may also want to look at your Frigg’s Chariot rune; this governs social relationships and is therefore also about connection.
Odin, Frigg and conflict

Weds 9th April

Odin and Frigg are not averse to placing a bet or two on their favourite humans, neither is a stranger to conflict. As both Chariots move into retreat the conflicts that arise through our individual and social actions are no longer mediated by their guidance meaning we could be in for a rough ride. So let’s look at how the Creator/ Destroyer (Odin’s Chariot) and the Receiver/ Releaser (Frigg’s Chariot) can support or hinder us through this time.
 
To prepare for this session:
– make sure you know your Odin and Frigg’s Chariot runes (bonus points for Halls and Hearths but we may not have time to couch on these)
– journaling, meditation on how you experience conflict
– look out for any insights as Odin and Frigg move through Ehwaz and Berkano in retreat mode
The Hearths and the Magical Self

Weds 14th May

This month we’re exploring the way the Hearth Mistresses can offer support, nurture and assistance to the Sage, Seer, Magician, Mystic and Healer within each of us. This can help us establish which Hearth Mistresses we want to work with and why. We will also be exploring how other members of the Asyniur (and wider feminine circle of guides) can help us on the journey.
 
To prepare for this session:
– review your birth runes for which Hearth Mistresses are particularly present for you

Belonging & Otherness with the North & South node

Weds 4th June

This theme is the result of my own personal journey with the North & South node. Typically the South node is seen as your place of comfort (the space you are coming from) and the North node as your space of evolution (where you are going).
 
In my own journey I found the North node path more exciting and the South node path harder to grasp. I realised that spaces where we ‘belong’ are not always spaces of comfort, and sometimes they are so familiar we can’t even see them. What can be useful is to think of the North node as a journey into ‘Otherness’ which changes us as we evolve; when we return to the South node we can see it energy, its environment more clearly because we have had a period of absence.
 
To prepare for this session:
– review your north and south node, hearths and halls
– journal or meditate on how comfortable/ uncomfortable you are with your two nodes

Personal returns and power runes

Weds 23rd July

Through this session we are going to plot the personal returns coming for you through the next rune cycle. This is an opportunity to look at each planet (up to Loki’s Chariot) and see where it holds special power for you. Returns are points when a planet returns into the sphere of the rune that was in power at the time of your birth.
 
To prepare for this session:
– have your birth runes report to hand
– meditate/ journal on how you feel around the time of your birthday (noting this will be when your Sun rune is normally in ascendance)
Embodied energy and the First Thread

Weds 10th Sept

In this session we are going to be exploring the influence the First Thread has on physical appearance and energetic appearance – referred to in the northern tradition as the lyke (physical likeness) and the hyde (like the hide of an animal but also ‘hiding’).
 
To prepare for this session:
– Make sure you know your First Thread rune, Hall and Hearth
– meditate/ journal on what your First Thread rune might have to teach you about your physical and energy bodies
Creative Animism and the Nornir’s Gift

Weds 22nd Oct

Animism is the assignation of a living soul to all natural phenomena and/ or the attribution of an organising consciousness to the material universe.
 
Through 2024 we explored the ‘Big 3’ – the outer Chariots that weren’t known in our sky until relatively recently in our history. We discussed how these influences might be seen as emerging as we, humanity, became more capable of influencing our global environment.
 
I think of Creative Animism as the active seeking out of that consciousness to support our evolution and counter-balance the commodification of our planetary resources.
 
If the universe had something it wanted you to have, a balancing force necessary to ensure your personal survival and contribution to our planet – could it be your Nornir’s Gift rune?

The Aettir, Halls & the Wheel of the Year

Weds 19th Nov

In this session we will be looking at the Wheel of the Year divided by the 3 Aettir and 12 Halls. How do they support us in interacting with the cycle of the year? Which parts work well, which less so?

– Research, journal and meditate upon how northern tradition astrology has influenced your own cycles through the wheel of the year
Reflecting on the year

I don’t really subscribe to the 1st January being the New Year but as most of the festivities take place on 31st I thought, why not come together with a brilliant group to make poor old 1st January just that little bit more special.

What if I already have my birth runes report?

Did the Vikings and Germanic peoples use their birth runes?

No. It is likely they had an astrological system, they certainly used the runes and believed absolutely in the role the Nornir, Disir and Wyrd took in their lives. Most of their core beliefs are lost to us, or were interpreted through the writings of Christians documenting them as they declined. The system my work is founded on is partially pieced together, partially re-imagined by Nigel Pennick in the last century.

I work with the system because it speaks to my soul in a way the Zodiac never has. I have developed and adapted it under the tutelage of my patron for this work, Frigga.

Who is the trainer?

Birth runes and runic astrology is led by Maggie Rose Cunningham a practitioner with 30 years experience in northern tradition work and multiple forms of spiritual, healing and magical practice.  In developing and delivering your programme Maggie draws on her experience as a priestess, healer, coach, shamanic practitioner and trainer and as well as 25 years in education and 15 years running Magin Rose.  She has been providing birth runes reports and oracular readings since 2018.  Her qualifications include two Masters Degrees, a range of healing and shamanic programmes as well as coaching, training Wild Voice (TM) and embodiment certifications.
