I am an idealist, through and through. I see the good in people, I believe a better world is possible, I don’t know when to give up. This morning a woman I have met just briefly in a professional context invited me to sit down with her. She said she saw in me a sadness she recognised in herself. It was an unexpected and beautiful invitation. We talked. We shared experiences. For about an hour the veils of what we both project out into the world in order to get on with the day were pierced. We learned that, yes, we do have some painful experiences in common. But we also celebrated the strength in each other, the hope, the optimism. If we were not so optimistic, we would not be filled with such hope – and we would not be so disappointed when life didn’t deliver on all those delicious dreams. The brighter the light the deeper the shadow.
I believe that it is the optimists who will change the world. The people who see the good, the people who dare to believe we can fix this crazy, crazy world. I put my faith in them every single day. I believe in their courageous magic and in the strength of their visions. I am inspired by them. I am enchanted by the possible futures they hold in their dreams. Some may call it an illusion – I call it our best hope of survival. Some illusions keep us separated from each other, the bustle of life that requires someone to be brave enough to say ‘sit down with me, I want to connect with you’. Others are the roadmaps to a better world.
In this week of the Full Moon we begin a new cycle of work in the Hearthspace with the sea Goddess Ran. Her name means ‘robber’ and she is said to draw sailors down into the depths with her nets. She whispers that enchantment and illusion can be oh so dangerous, and so so powerful.
Through this week the Moon will reach its fullness making this an excellent time for magical work. The planetary movements speak of sacred exchange in many forms: what we give in the present so we may receive in the future, what promises we make in our souls, what we ask for from each other. We will be exploring this with the following six runes:
- Gebo – exchange, contracts, promises
- Perthro – karma, fate, wyrd
- Inguz – the seed, gestation, the hero
- Jera – the year, success, harvest
- Kenaz – the torch, enlightenment, manifestation
- Wunjo – family, belonging, happiness

If you are new to Middle Earth Readings, we follow the lunar cycle, allowing us to dive deeper into each rune:
- On the week of the new Moon we will be setting intentions for working with a single rune as a spirit guide during the course of the month.
- On the week of the waxing Moon we will be opening to receiving the guidance and energies of that rune
- On the week of the Full Moon we will be exploring rune magics
- On the week of the waning Moon we will be working on releasing and completion ready for a new cycle to begin
We cover 6 runes in depth each session meaning we will cover all 24 during the course of each lunar cycle. Supporting every phase we have a beautiful discussion thread set up by the lovely Suzanne in the Hearthspace for you to share your intentions, receivings, magics and releasing.

Join the Hearthspace this week as we prepare to launch a month of working with the Goddess of the deep sea Rán. We will be venturing into the spaces of illusion and enchantment to ask whether these can every be forces for good and what place they have in today’s world. If there was a top 10 of Goddesses who personify the repressed aspects of self, and the feminine in particular, Rán would definitely be on that shortlist.
